BAIN & COMPANY TAPS WEIWEN HAN TO LEAD THE FIRM THROUGH ITS NEXT PHASE OF GROWTH IN GREATER CHINA
(Sep.6, 2016, /HRoot.com/)Bain & Company, the global business consultancy, has named Weiwen Han as managing director of its Greater China practice where he will be responsible for leading growth, operations, people and brand strategy for the firm’s offices in Shanghai, Beijing and Hong Kong. Han’s appointment, announced today by Bob Bechek, Bain’s worldwide managing director, and Dale Cottrell, head of the firm’s Asia Pacific (APAC) region, coincides with Bain’s 25th anniversary in Greater China.
“Weiwen is a trusted advisor who brings a truly unique perspective to his work with local and multi-national companies in Greater China,” said Bechek. “His ‘outside-in’ approach is an asset for businesses seeking to revise their strategies, improve their operations and ensure continued profitable growth here and beyond.”
Han will focus on further developing local talent and expertise to better serve clients in the region as well as guiding the Greater China practice through its next wave of growth. He has nearly 20 years of management consulting experience and has helped many mid- and large-sized global and Chinese companies develop strategy, improve their performance and upgrade their management capabilities, including organization, operations and IT. Most recently, Han was a partner in the firm’s Private Equity practice and a senior member of its Digital, Consumer Products and Retail practices. He is also actively engaged in Bain’s Developing Market 100 initiative.
“I am honored to take on this new role and to continue working with my colleagues in Greater China to help our clients address their most pressing business challenges, seize opportunities for greater growth and transform into high-performing organizations,” said Han.
Michael Thorneman, who served as managing director of Bain Greater China for eight years, will return to advising the firm’s private equity and corporate clients in China on strategy, performance improvement, M&A, organization and investments. The move is part of Bain’s ‘servant leader’ model in which partners regularly rotate into leadership roles and then back to full-time client work.
Under Thorneman, Bain’s Greater China practice’s revenue has grown by double-digits annually, with a diverse mix of enduring local and multi-national client relationships across China’s core industries, including consumer products and retail, industrial goods, financial services, private equity, technology, media, telecommunications and healthcare, among others.
This growth has been led by a large and highly successful leadership team, more than 80 percent of which are Chinese nationals. During this time, Bain Greater China has also made a significant impact on social causes. Additionally, Bain has been at the forefront of economic development in China through its membership in the International Business Leaders Advisory Council (IBLAC), an advisory group to the mayor of Shanghai, which Bain’s Orit Gadiesh chaired for three years.
“It has been an honor to lead the Greater China office for the past eight years and I look forward to continuing my work with the firm, helping our clients and achieving more success across Greater China.” said Thorneman.
Thorneman and Han will work closely together over the next six months to ensure a seamless transition. Han will officially take over the role of managing director on Oct. 1, 2016.
